Introduction to Nano Structures

Nano structures refer to materials and systems engineered at the nanometer scale (1–100 nm) that exhibit unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. Understanding nano structures is essential for innovations in medicine, energy, electronics, and materials science.

What are Nano Structures?

Nano structures are engineered forms of matter with at least one dimension in the nanometer range. They can be classified based on their dimensionality and include:

Types of Nano Structures:

Zero-dimensional: Nanoparticles, quantum dots

One-dimensional: Nanotubes, nanorods

Two-dimensional: Graphene sheets, nanofilms

Three-dimensional: Nanoporous materials, nanocomposites

Fundamental Concepts Covered

1. Structure and Morphology

Understanding how atomic and molecular arrangement at the nanoscale affects material performance.

2. Surface Area and Surface Energy

Explains why nano materials have high reactivity due to their large surface area-to-volume ratio.

3. Quantum Effects

Highlights how electrons behave differently in confined nanoscale environments, impacting conductivity, optics, and magnetism.

Applications of Nanostructures

Electronics & Semiconductors

Used in transistors, sensors, and logic gates due to their high conductivity and miniaturization.

Energy Storage and Conversion

Used in batteries, fuel cells, and solar panels to enhance energy efficiency and durability.

Biomedical Fields

Applications include drug delivery, tissue engineering, and nanoscale diagnostics.
